NANAIMO — A popular mid-Island campground will soon see some overdue improvements.
Snaw-Naw-As First Nation, through their Nanoose Economic Development Corporation, received $242,496 in provincial funding for key upgrades to their campsite.
Cindy Stern, board director for the corporation, told NanaimoNewsNOW the money will go towards replacing aging buildings and infrastructure.
“We knew we needed to replace the washroom/shower facility and the septic, all of that was failing. When we undertook that we applied for grants to do all the infrastructure upgrades, because they’re all 30 years old and in much need of updating.”
A new washroom, shower and laundry building is the crown jewel of the upgrades, which also included upgraded power and water connections for the campsites.
The work is expected to be completed before the start of the camping season this spring.
Improved sewer hookups are hoped to be included in future rounds of work at the site.
The Snaw-Naw-As campsite is a popular spot for visitors, with Stern suggesting their 70+ spots are in high demand through the summer months.
Stern also said they’re looking at some more ambitious plans at the facility.
“We have long term plans to do upgrades and expand into cabins, we see a real great future for the campground.”
The Ladysmith Maritime Society also received government funding, announced Friday, Feb. 4.
The group was given $319,375 for expansion of a floating maritime museum and interactive heritage boat fleet display.
